Who Will Win? Predicting This Season’s Champions League Quarter Finals
Contents
We have reached the final eight for this season’s Champions League. With the likes of PSG, Barcelona and Ajax already out of the tournament, it has been a season with many surprises. There has also been a glut of sides who have made it through as expected; we are looking at you Man City, Liverpool and Bayern. With the quarter finals throwing up some interesting ties, we look at whether there are going to be any more shocks at this stage of the tournament.
Without any further delay, here are our predictions for the upcoming games.
Chelsea v Real Madrid
Why Chelsea Can Win It:
The Blues went all the way last season and will not hand over their title without a big fight.
Why Madrid Can Win It:
Real may not have the superstars it once had, but they do have a team spirit that hasn’t always been present in their squads. Their victory over PSG proved that.
Prediction
Off the field matters have been a distraction for Chelsea this season and Madrid look like a team that is playing with both heart and guile. Our prediction is for them to defeat Chelsea over the two-legs. This is ‘The Last Dance’ for a number of their players, who will be looking to end their season in the best way possible.
Man City v Atletico Madrid
Why Man City Can Win It:
City has the best squad left in the tournament and a manager who knows what it takes to win the Champions League.
Why Atletico Can Win:
Simeone has been upsetting the odds against more talented sides for years. His Atletico side has already knocked out the other Manchester side.
Prediction
City should be too strong for Atletico. However, ‘should’ doesn’t win tournaments and we just have a slight inkling that Diego and the bad guys might just get the better of The Sky Blues. Atletico know how to take the sting out of a game and grind out a result. We think he might do it once again here.
Villarreal v Bayern
Why Villareal Can Win It:
This is a side with excellent European pedigree, having won last year’s Europa League.
Why Bayern Can Win It:
Bayern look to have all the tools to lift the trophy and to be frank, we are not sure anyone can stop Rober Lewandowski this year.
Prediction
Bayern has their ruthlessness back and we fully expect them to dispatch of Villarreal without too much fuss. The Spanish side has been a tough nut to crack so far this season, but Bayern and Lewandowski are streets ahead of them.
Benfica v Liverpool
Why Benfica Can Win It:
Darwin Nuñez has been a revelation for The Eagles and could be the key man if they are to upset the odds once more.
Why Liverpool Can Win It: Jurgen Klopp’s side has excellent European experience and they are a squad full of talent.
Prediction
This one is the easiest to call out of all the remaining fixtures. Benfica has done brilliantly to get this far, but it is likely that this is where The Eagle’s journey ends.
Those are our four predictions for the quarter finals. If they all come true, then we will have semi-final pairings of Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich v Liverpool.
It goes without saying, but those would be spectacular games. Return to us after the semi-finals to get our full predictions for those games.
