Who Will Be Crowned English Premier League Champions?
The Premier League season is hitting its stride and the table is beginning to take shape. At the top end, Chelsea has found a new level of consistency, while Liverpool and Manchester City look like serious contenders.
Past winners, Arsenal and Leicester, are struggling with mid-table mediocrity, while Tottenham and Manchester United are realistically aiming for the one Champions League place.
That being said, there is a long way to go to in the title race and much can change. However, it is always fun trying to predict where the season will go…
The Main Contenders
Chelsea
When Thomas Tuchel took over Chelsea, they looked like a group of talented individuals, rather than an excellent team. In the season that followed, he turned them into winners. They captured last season’s Champions League and they looked tremendous while doing so.
This year, his Chelsea side have progressed even further, with the addition of Romelu Lukaku looking like a masterstroke. They have gained a consistency that they hadn’t had previously and currently look like a team that is in the ascendency.
We think that they might just fall short this season, but with this group of players and Tuchel as their manager, they might make the grade next season.
Our prediction is a third-placed finish. Be at Stamford Bridge and order your Chelsea tickets here.
Liverpool
There were times during last season when Liverpool looked like a team in complete disarray.
The steeliness that Jurgen Klopp had previously brought to the side had abandoned them. Of course, towards the end of the season, they regained their composure to finish within the Champions League places. However, they were not themselves throughout and it showed.
Thus far this season, they look back to their excellent best. Mo Salah is regularly demonstrating his ability as one of the best players of this generation, while the return of Virgil van Dijk has given an added solidity to the defence.
It is easy to forget the standard both them and Manchester City set in the seasons prior to last. With some excellent young players coming through the fringes and the likes of Salah, Mane and Firmino hitting their stride, it’s hard to look past them for this season’s title. Manchester City
Manchester City claimed their fifth Premier League title and their seventh English title last season. They were excellent throughout and Pep deserves credit for his ability to get the most out of such a talented group of players. However, this season it seems that it is either a feast or a famine in front of goal for The Citizens.
They started their season off with a 1-0 defeat to Leicester in The Community Shield and then lost by the same score line to Tottenham on the league’s opening day.
Southampton also kept them scoreless, and they only scored the one against Chelsea and in their league game against Leicester. Of course, they have had their free scoring days, most notably against Arsenal and Norwich, but they haven’t always looked clinical.
We do think they will be up towards the top at the end of the season, but without the ideal number nine, they may struggle to turn some of the closer games into positive results.
Our prediction is that Man City will finish second.
The Others
Brighton Albion currently sits within the Champions League positions, but we don’t see them doing a Leicester and upsetting the odds this year. Meanwhile, it looks like Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur will have to confine their ambitions to top-four finishes for yet another season.
Arsenal have a good young side, but they are not where they used to be, and Leicester seem to be forging a new identity as a cup team.
For us, this season’s title will be decided among Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City, with the Merseyside team coming out on top for their second title of the Premier League era. See our English Premier League ticket page for all the latest prices and hospitality packages.
